Green Flag forecasts nearly 40,000 breakdowns over Bank Holiday weekend
20.7 million vehicles are due to hit the road to make the most of the long weekend and the breakdown cover provider, Green Flag, has predicted flat and faulty batteries will make up 8771 of the breakdowns followed by 5283 caused by punctures, 3397 by engine faults and 1295 caused by clutch errors.
Luckily, Green Flag have recently developed a state of the art telematics unit called Green Flag Alert Me which reduces the chance of breakdown by monitoring a car’s battery and engine management systems. If the unit detects a vehicle health issue, drivers are notified of any faults through the Alert Me app before breakdown occurs.
The plug-in unit cost just £35 a year and has a wealth of benefits. There were almost five million breakdowns in the UK alone in the last 12 months with an average response time of 47 minutes. Due to the expected high demand of breakdown services over the coming weekend, Brits could be waiting hours at the roadside for assistance. Thankfully, the Green Flag device could save UK drivers over 38,000 hours every year by detecting potential issues before becoming a 2 hour wait at the road side.
Not only will the handy device save time, it could also save them money. British drivers currently spend an estimated £21 billion on servicing their cars. By installing the Green Flag Alert Me device, diagnosis time could be cut in half, consequently reducing repair costs.
Neil Wilson, Head of Rescue at Green Flag, said: “We created Green Flag Alert Me with our customers’ needs at the core. Although breakdowns can’t be avoided every time, with Green Flag Alert Me drivers will be saved from unnecessary breakdowns caused by faults they weren’t aware of. Now, we’ll be with them on the whole journey – letting them know about potential issues before they turn into problems.”
