UK telematics uptake has almost doubled in less than a year

The uptake of telematics amongst UK businesses has almost doubled in less than a year, according to a recent report by from the RAC.

In a matter of just 9 months, the number of businesses using telematics within their fleet vehicles jumped from 38% to 65% – a 27% increase compared to 2015.

The increase in the use of telematics isn’t exclusive to a specific sector of business, with the survey revealing that 70% of business services now use vehicle tracking devices, followed by retail at 67% and the construction industry at 66%.

This increase isn’t just isolated to large companies but sole traders and small fleets too, with 58% of small firms saying that they use telematics compared to 25% in 2015.

There are a variety of reasons as to why a business may invest in telematics solutions, some ranked higher than others. For example, 80% of businesses said they used the technology for staff vehicle tracking, 54% for monitoring driver behaviour and training purposes and for 37%, monitoring vehicle health was a priority reason for installing telematics to their fleet.

Another section of the report looks at what businesses will be expecting from technology in the future such as greater integration with other motoring services, including breakdown and accident management.

Trakm8 customers such as Direct Line, Privilege and the AA, have already harnessed the wider benefits of telematics for insurance, accident management and breakdown services.

Trakm8 provides vehicle tracking and driver behaviour monitoring to the AA’s 3,000 roadside assistance and recovery vehicles, saving the business £1million in the first year alone. Through joint developments, Trakm8 and the AA are now working together to pass on the benefits of vehicle health and driver behaviour insights to their business customers and personal members.

The report suggests that the UK businesses are waking up to the multitude of benefits introduced through the introduction of telematics so it is vital that fleet managers understand the variety of choices available to them in order to ensure they have the correct solution to suit their business needs.
