This device will help fleets to avoid new penalties for using a mobile phone at the wheel

Fleet management and telematics specialists, Trakm8, now offer a product which prevents drivers from using a smartphone at the wheel. Drivers across England, Wales and Scotland will now face harsher penalties for using a handheld mobile phone while driving.

The law, which comes into force today, will see offenders given a £200 fine and six penalty points; an increase from the minimum £100 fine and 3 penalty points issued previously.

Although the changes will act a successful deterrent for many drivers, there is no guarantee that the amendments will work entirely. Last year, a survey by Trakm8, suggested that only 16% of drivers agreed that the introduction of heavier punishments would stop them from using their mobile at the wheel.

With the latest figures from the DVLA suggesting that over half a million (595,623) drivers would be at risk of losing their licence completely if caught using breaking the law just once*, businesses must ensure that strict mobile phone policies are put in place.

Trakm8 is the provider of CellControl, an in-cab device that combines with software to prevent fleet drivers from using their mobile phone while using a company-owned vehicle.

Besides preventing illegal smartphone distractions, CellControl aims to save lives, reduce injuries and increase staff safety.

Fleet managers and businesses use a combination of software, a smartphone app, and a discrete in-cab device to block driver access to specific applications such as phone calls, social media, text messaging and music, while the vehicle is moving.

If drivers attempt to access restricted applications or unlock their device while driving, breaches are logged on the CellControl software and available to fleet managers in downloadable reports. Phone calls to emergency services are exempt from the restriction and calls of this nature can be made at any time.

The in-cab device is solar powered therefore can be installed in vehicles of all types and sizes, requiring no installation time or costs.

CellControl is compatible with Android, Apple iOS, Blackberry, Windows and Symbian devices.

Trakm8 has recently published a whitepaper discussing how the new laws will affect fleet managers and exploring how technology can be used to combat driver distraction. ‘The Fleet Manager’s Guide: Changes to the Law on Mobile Phone Use While Driving’ can be downloaded here: https://get.trakm8.com/the-fleet-managers-guide-to-changes-to-mobile-phone-law

Colin Ferguson, Managing Director of Fleet and Optimisation at Trakm8 said: “It is an offence to cause or permit a driver to use a hand-held mobile phone while driving therefore employers can also be held liable for offences committed by their drivers. Having a tool like CellControl helps to reduce the risk of employees breaking the law but more importantly, it will hugely benefit the safety of drivers. It is a misconception that mobile phone use amongst employees is an unaddressable risk but this product gives business the opportunity to ensure their mobile phone policies are enforced.”
